Very few thoughts we have are completely original. The human brain is a convolution engine which plays host to concepts and narratives harvested consciously or unconsciously from the stimuli-space around us. These are largely innocuous and often helpful tools necessary for our participation in a civilized sentient species but can also be highly destructive to their hosts and the societies they inhabit. Philosophers and evolutionary biologists alike (perhaps most notably Richard Dawkins) have compared memetic packages to viruses whose fitness can be measured by their relative capacity to infect new hosts. While this is a valid model, it fails to grasp the complexity and depth of our relationship to memes. In the following posts Orb will make the case that some of these memes are as alive, complex and conscious as us. We will explore how memetic packages can generate entire cultures, topple civilizations and even commit acts of genocide. Existing memetic packages well known to most readers will be disassembled and analyzed. The immense power of well-designed ideas to manipulate millions is the greatest secret of the myriad well-known secret societies throughout human history. Here we will cast those pearls to the masses in order to democratize the roots of our modern beliefs and render toothless current efforts by the wealthy and powerful to harness memetics for their own gain. Now, let’s drag some make-believe into the light and BBQ some sacred cows.
